I'm reminded of Bernard Fall's 1966 report of a military interview with the highest level insurgent cadre yet captured by the US in South Vietnam. Under questioning, the prisoner acknowledged that the Americans were a formidable adversary. Asked to give his reasons for saying this, he suggested it was not merely because of their weaponry but because of their deceptive cleverness. Two American officers overseeing the interrogation, when the comment was translated for them, burst out laughing.
